Prepare Your Home for Showings
Buyers decide how they feel about a home within minutes of walking in. Good preparation does not mean a costly renovation — it means the home looks clean, cared for, and easy to imagine living in.
Start with clean and clear. Deep-clean kitchens and bathrooms, clear counters and floors, and remove extra furniture and personal items such as family photos. Less clutter makes rooms look bigger, and it lets buyers picture their own life in the home instead of yours.
Next, fix the small things buyers notice. A dripping faucet, a loose handle, a burned-out bulb, or scuffed paint each takes little to repair — but left undone, they suggest bigger problems may be hiding. Small fixes are cheap protection against that impression.
Then think about light and the first look. Open curtains, turn on lights for every showing, and keep the entrance tidy. Outside, mow the lawn, trim bushes, and clear the walkway — the buyer’s first photo of your home is taken from the street.
Finally, leave the house during showings. Buyers speak honestly and stay longer when the seller is not there, and honest reactions are what lead to offers. Take pets with you, and keep the home ready to show on short notice while it is listed.
Before you open the door
Before your first showing, walk in through your own front door and look at each room the way a stranger would. Anything that catches your eye in the first ten seconds will catch a buyer’s too — fix that list first.
